Why the Fear of Appearing to Fail Is Keeping You Invisible in Your Business
I want to tell you something I have been managing for too long.
I teach that failure is the currency to success.
And I have been protecting my own image from the very thing I teach.
Not because I am a hypocrite. Because something was installed in me before any coaching framework had a chance to reach it.
And I think it might be running your marketing too.
Where the fear comes from
When you grow up in an environment where failure has consequences beyond the ordinary, when it gets blamed on you, used against you, turned into proof of something that is not true about who you are, your brain learns something very specific.
Failure is not just painful. Failure is dangerous.
So you learn to look capable. Put together. Like someone who has it figured out.
You keep the real version of yourself safely out of sight. The one who is still learning. Still failing. Still figuring it out in the middle of a life that has not resolved yet.
And then you build a business.
And you bring that habit with you.
You share the wins. The results. The transformation stories where everything worked out.
And you wonder why the women you most want to reach do not feel truly connected to you.
What only showing the wins costs you
Here is what I have had to face.
When you only show the after, your audience can admire you. But they cannot see themselves in you.
They can respect your success. But they cannot trust your process.
They can engage with your content. But they cannot feel you in it.
And the women you most want to reach, the ones who are in the middle of their own messy becoming, they do not see themselves in a highlight reel.
They see themselves in honesty.
They see themselves in someone who is three steps ahead and willing to say I am still walking too.
That is the content that makes someone put their hand on their chest.
That is the content that makes someone reach out and say I needed to hear that today.
That is the content that builds real trust. And real trust is what people invest in.
My own middle
I want to be specific because I have been vague about this for too long.
I have ovarian cancer. I am funding an alternative healing journey because my body developed an allergy to standard treatment. I am navigating a difficult season in my marriage. I am building a business toward a goal I have not hit yet.
And I am showing up every week to coach other women through their patterns while working through my own in real time.
For a long time I shared the insights without sharing the context.
The teaching without the living.
The framework without the mess it came from.
Because I was afraid that showing the middle would make me look like I had not figured it out yet.
Here is what I now know.
The middle is the credential.
Not the MBA. Not the certification. Not the polished content.
The fact that I am doing this work while I am still in it. That I am healing and building and coaching and figuring it out all at the same time. And I am willing to say so.
That is what the women who need me most have been waiting to see.
What showing the middle actually looks like
I want to be clear about something.
Showing the middle does not mean sharing everything. It does not mean processing publicly or making your audience your support system.
It means being honest about still walking the path.
It means saying I have not hit this goal yet and here is what I am learning in the waiting.
It means saying this was hard for me too and here is what helped.
It means letting people see enough of the real version of you that they can find themselves in your story.
Not all of it. Just enough.
That is the difference between a highlight reel and a human being.
And human beings are who people follow. Invest in. Trust with the most important work of their lives.
The question worth sitting with
Where have you been hiding the middle of your story?
What are you in the middle of right now that the women who need you most would recognize themselves in?
And is the fear of appearing to fail worth the cost of the connection you are missing by staying in the highlight reel?
If you want support finding where this pattern is showing up in your overworking and your visibility, the quiz is the place to start.
